http://news.goldseek.com/GoldSeek/1223619420.php

DiscoTonio a écrit:

Ceci a permis :

I wonder how he explains why gold -- which serves only one real purpose, to store wealth instead of storing fiat paper alternatives -- does not have a price in fiat money terms that has kept pace with the manipulated CPI and PPI.

The answer is simple. The gold supply has been artificially inflated at a rate similar to that of fiat money by supplementing mine supply and central bank dishoarding with a blizzard of paper IOU gold. In this way the gold price is suppressed. The Gold Cartel hasn't cared about the damage inflicted on the mining industry, because why bother to mine gold when you can create paper substitutes?

But every time in history when this has been done there eventually has been a "bank run" when it was revealed that the gold in the vaults had been encumbered or sold many times over.

This is what is beginning to happen right now. The market is entering a very different phase. As the run on the Bank of the Gold Cartel gathers pace, the price moves are going to shock even the most bullish. The usual shenanigans of the cartel to turn the market down by selling a blizzard of paper future gold promises will be impotent against a marauding crowd of investors hungry for real gold.

Let's Get Physical With China
by Adam Brochert, September 04, 2009, Safe Haven
http://ow.ly/15O975

Citer:
The recent development of the Chinese government no longer restricting Gold and silver ownership and now actively promoting it is a very, very big deal (see article reporting this here and see this clip from Chinese television promoting silver - please remember that this item would not appear on Chinese television without explicit central government approval). To quote from the linked article:

"The Chinese are being converted from being the lowest per capita [G]old consumers in the world to a nation of small precious metals investors. Now, by next year, Chinese consumption of [G]old is likely to exceed that of India, which has been for years the world's biggest [G]old market."

Citer:
The physical markets for Gold and silver are severely constrained. Those who say otherwise are dishonest or ignorant. Paper Gold and silver, which is not the same as Gold and silver at all, is plentiful. It is easy to buy the GLD ETF, a futures contract or some other paper proxy for actual physical Gold. I think these instruments defeat the purpose of Gold and silver investing and actually help to keep the price much lower than it should be. I do not advise paper Gold. Those who want paper investments should invest in Gold mining companies, but I think it is prudent to first secure some physical Gold as a portfolio anchor and insurance against paper defaults.

Citer:
A government with a fiat currency that is backed by nothing but paper promises should be trying to get its citizens to despise Gold! Gold is the enemy of fiat currency regimes and always has been. America has been taught that Gold investing is kooky or weird and for "end of the world" types. This mantra has been repeated by the mainstream financial community over and over and Americans, in aggregate, have been brainwashed to believe it.

Why wouldn't the Chinese, who have an unbacked paper currency pegged to America's unbacked paper currency, promote saving money in Yuan to their people? Why wouldn't they tell their people how strong their banks are and how they can earn 5% or 10% on a long-term certificate of deposit? In short, why aren't they lying to their people about money as our government lies to us?

Citer:
I believe China is preparing for a post-U.S. Dollar world and I believe they are planning to promote a precious metals backed currency in some form (whether their own or an international currency for trading purposes). I believe this is being done methodically and gradually by China and I believe it has grave long-term implications for the U.S. Dollar.

Citer:
Gold stands in the way of those who believe increasing the indebtedness of a country is a way to grow or stimulate anything besides debt and increased central bank power.

Citer:
While China has begun promoting real savings to their people, the United States continues to deny reality and promote toxic waste to its citizens, pretending that our Dollar is strong and our banking system is solvent. When demand for Gold and silver increases in the United States, our government conveniently stops making the retail coins they are legally bound to produce. The more popular these U.S. Mint coins become, the less our government wants to make them.

Citer:
Let's get physical along with China and restore some of the wealth destroyed over the past few years by replacing it with actual debt-free savings.

Bref, A LIRE ABSOLUMENT !

Barrick Capitulates

Citer:
Barrick Gold and their bullion bank partner J.P. Morgan were the target of lawsuits by the gold bulls, most recently Blanchard and Company, for price manipulation through the use of forward sales in their hedge book. The contention was that the selling was being used to manipulate the price of gold.

Barrick's initial defense was that if they were acting in conjunction with the central banks, they were therefore immune from prosecution since the central banks are immune from prosecution.

Citer:
On a related note, one of the current largest holders of the gold ETF (GLD) is now reported to be J.P Morgan, which is also a holder of one of the largest short gold positions on the COMEX.

Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) the world’s largest gold producer, said it will increase the size of a share sale announced Tuesday by 17% to $3.5 billion in response to investor demand.

The Toronto-based company will sell 94.8 million common shares for $36.95 each, up from the 81.2 million shares announced Tuesday, Barrick said in a statement. Lead underwriters RBC Capital Markets, Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan. and Scotia Capital have an option to increase the sale to $4 billion within 30 days.

Barrick is raising funds to eliminate fixed-price contracts after eight years of successive gold-price increases.

Adrian Douglas: Barrick can't get gold needed to cover hedges
09/09/2009, GATA, Adrian Douglas
http://www.gata.org/node/7773

Citer:
But Barrick is not eliminating hedges by actually delivering gold. The company is instead raising cash to pay off its obligations. This is technically a default on the delivery of the hedged gold.

Citer:
A gold hedge is entered into when a gold mining company expects that the future price of gold will be lower than it is today. The company enters into a contract with a third party to sell some of its yet-to-be-mined gold in the ground. For this the company receives the cash value of the gold based on the prevailing spot price. The company then has an obligation to produce the gold and deliver it to the third party at some future date. If the gold price indeed declines, the company reaps a superior profit on its gold sales compared with selling the gold as it is mined at the prevailing spot price. But if the price of gold rises, the mining company has forgone some of its profit by having sold the gold in advance at a lower price.

Citer:
Barrick has announced that the company is not delivering the gold it has sold forward. The company is raising cash from the sale of stock so it might deliver cash instead of gold.

Citer:
this means that some time in the past Barrick received cash for its yet-to-be-mined gold that the company now is having to pay back, along with considerably more, insofar as the company is recording a loss of $5.6 billion without a single ounce of gold being involved. This is not mining; it is gambling.

Citer:
In theory Barrick should have to go into the market and buy gold to deliver into its obligations instead of paying cash. Of course this would blow the gold price sky-high and thus might bankrupt the company in the process. But this is not the end of the story because the counterparty to these hedges, probably JPMorganChase, no doubt also has obligations to deliver to some other entity the gold it was expecting from Barrick -- maybe a central bank.

DiscoTonio a écrit:

The first company I want to write about is Barrick Gold, which is scheduled to become the largest gold mining company in the world by virtue of its merger with Placer Dome. On December 30, that merger was not consummated, so the figures I will discuss apply to Barrick without Placer, although also being a hedger, the addition of Placer to Barrick will only increase the numbers I quote.

Barrick Gold is the largest gold hedger in the world, holding a short hedge position of almost 13 million ounces. In the last quarter alone, because the price of gold increased by roughly $43, Barrick should record a mark-to-market loss of $560 million on its gold short hedge. The loss for the year and half-year comes to a cool billion dollars. This should increase the total outstanding loss on Barrick hedge book to just shy of $3 billion. With Placer added in, the loss has to be greater than $4 billion.

The almost $3 billion open gold loss on Barrick’s books is greater than their cumulative total profits for the entire existence of the company. To my knowledge, it is the largest derivatives loss in history. I ask you to think about that for a moment. The world was atwitter with the recent $200 million copper loss by China, as well as the $500 million oil loss and bankruptcy by China Aviation Fuel (Singapore) last year. Barrick is set to report a $560 million gold hedge loss for the quarter, $1 billion for six months and almost $3 billion in total, and the financial world looks the other way.

Barrick poursuivi pour info mensongéres sur hedging
http://www.gata.org/node/7266

Citer:
GATA began its battle with Barrick and its massive hedging program 10 years ago, accusing them of playing a vital role in the gold price suppression scheme in complicity with The Gold Cartel.

Citer:
And, as veteran Café members know all too well, GATA has been constantly mocked/derided by the mainstream gold world pundits, the World Gold Council, the bullion dealers, and Muppet groupies for pillorying Barrick.
You might ask, "How could Barrick be with the rich and powerful and be so dumb?"
Simple…
*Barrick’s plan was to join forces with others in The Gold Cartel and drive the price down so low as to wipe out others in the industry and then pick up their valuable, way undervalued resources.
*Frank Arisman of JP Morgan, a managing director of JP Morgan Chase and a Board member of AngloGold (another key Gold Cartel player) was a key figure in these dealings. JP Morgan’s office was right above Barrick’s in Toronto.
*Barrick made a pact with The Gold Cartel devil, meaning they couldn’t lift their hedges. They were stuck, which is probably why they have stupidly carried them all these years.

Chris, Bill,
DEFAULT!!!!!!!!!!!
Angolgold has been reducing its hedges by delivering gold from production into the hedge contracts. In other words paying back the loans with gold.
It looks to me that this is the first major sign of physical market stress that I have been pounding the table about recently which was eloquently summed by Paul Walker, CEO of GFMS "large lumpy transactions in a market that has a degree of illiquidity". Barrick's deal represents a gold delivery DEFAULT. They are paying back cash. They are not paying back in gold.
QUOTE
The current negative $3.7 billion MTM position of the gloating contracts does not change with gold prices. No activity in the gold market is required to settle these floating contracts.
END
This is in my opinion is a bombshell. What will be the domino effect as the bullion banks that were meant to receive gold don’t have it to meet their obligations?
Cheers

Adrian

Citer:
There seems to be little doubt that China continues to buy gold for its reserves, but surreptitiously, as it has no desire to move the markets unduly, and it knows full well that any announcement of a big gold purchase will likely do just that.

Citer:
This looks as though it means not only is China buying on dips in the gold price - and there is evidence of strong support from somewhere every time gold falls to a certain level - but is also concealing its purchases by not moving the gold into official reserves, but the holding of it by some other government entity so it stays off the official books. When China relatively recently announced its big jump in gold reserves it was apparent the purchases had actually taken place over about five years and were only moved into the official reserves this year, and thus only then reported to the IMF. Thus it is likely that purchases are continuing in the same manner - off the open books.
